three moisturizing mega mushroom products from Origins
Shitaki, portabello, crimini — GIRL, can we just talk about my favorite mushrooms for a minute? (My favorite ones to eat.) I’ve got a small box of organic criminis waiting to be added to an omelet for lunch, yum!

The Mega-Mushroom line

The Origins Mega-Mushroom line is a collection of cleansers ($31 each), a toner ($34), serums ($48-73) and moisturizers ($66 each) for sensitive, dry and red, irritated skin, and, if you’re curious, no, they do not smell like mushrooms.

Essential oils

The three products I tried (the face Cleanser, Micellar Cleanser and Soothing treatment Lotion, which is generally a toner) smell lightly of lavender, which I guess isn’t a surprise, considering that lavender oil is one of the ingredients, along with other essential oils, like orange and patchouli (FYI, I’ve provided the ingredients of the products I’ve checked at the bottom of this post).

Reishi mushroom

The star ingredient, though, is a mushroom called reishi, or lingzhi mushroom, which is used in standard Chinese medicine for healing and longevity, and it’s meant to soothe red, sensitive skin.

I know this because Origins has this kick-@ss plant finder for all of the botanical ingredients in their products on their website.

The last time they revamped their packaging, they also revamped their entire technique to the line. now they place plant-based ingredients front and center, kinda like Aveda does, and they list all of their ingredient on the website, which is SO helpful. It lets you get to know their products on a deeper, a lot more functional level.

So, who’s this Dr. Weil dude, anyway?
He’s an author and celebrity doctor known for championing a healthy lifestyle and alternative medicine, and he donates the profits from the line to the non-profit Weil Foundation, which promotes integrative medicine, or the combination of alternative medical treatments alongside conventional medicine.

Moisturizing

I haven’t had any sensitive, red patches lately (knock on wood), so I can’t examine how well these work to minimize redness and sensitivity, but after steadily using them for three weeks, I can say that my combo dry/oily face is content with the high level of hydration, and the products haven’t triggered any breakouts yet.

Good for a quick first cleanse in the morning

The cleanser, toner and micellar water

I like the face Cleanser ($31) as a first cleanse in the morning, or, a second cleanse at night, considering that it doesn’t remove makeup.

It’s creamy, non-foaming, removes oil and dirt, and doesn’t strip my skin or leave my cheeks feeling tight.

The Soothing treatment lotion ($34) is a liquid toner, and I place a few drops on a Shiseido Facial Cotton, then apply it on my face after washing with the face Cleaner.

As for the Micellar Cleanser ($31), it’s gentle and moisturizing, but it doesn’t remove makeup, so it’s not ideal for me, and I think there are similar products out there that aren’t as expensive.

The take-home message

I recommend the cleanser and toner, especially if you have dry skin that craves lots of moisture, but enjoy out for the essential oils if you have EO sensitivities, especially to lavender, orange or patchouli.

Havana ($20) is a lovely warm-toned golden brown without any type of orange or red undertones, as well as it’s best for when you just want to wear one eyeshadow on your lids. I’ve tried to squeeze into my old pants and shorts a few times considering that then, but… Well, it didn’t work. My body is completely different now.

Before Connor, I just assumed that by the time she was two years old I’d be able to get back into those clothes again. other mommies have told me that your hips and ribs eventually shift back to where they had been before, but I don’t think that’s gonna happen for me at this point. everything is just broader than it used to be. My hips, my booty, my upper body. Everything.

Part of me knows I need to turn the page and build a new wardrobe at my current size, because, well…even though I don’t fit into those old clothes anymore, I’m normally delighted with my body. Yes, I look different than I used to, but I’m physically stronger than I was when I was skinnier a few years ago, and I kill IT when we do burpies and weighted switch lunges in HITT class. Oh, and is that a heavy sand bag?? Yeah, I can press that bad kid over my head!

When you casually try to take a selfie in HIIT class but end up making a funny face because everyone is poking fun at you for taking said selfie in class… (Winged liner Tee from my store, connorclaire.com)
I may have been able to fit into my short shorts back then, but I know I wasn’t strong enough to do things like that.

My current tee shirt and pant size are the largest I’ve ever worn, and often I wonder if I must keep battling against that, or accept it. I don’t know if accepting the size I am ideal now is me just giving up.

Even though I’m delighted with where I’m at, I feel like I must keep trying to get back into those clothes, which sounds like a contradiction, I know, but yeah, I am conflicted! I don’t know what to do! LOL। part of me thinks, “I can do it. I know I can.”

But do I want to? Do I care that much? Is it necessary? Am I just being vain?

Part of me also doesn’t want to (well, it wants to, but it doesn’t think it should) get a bunch of new clothes now because Connor will be starting preschool in a few months, and girl, childcare in America is no joke! We hear that all the time, and it has become a cliché, but kids. Really. Are. महँगो।

Also, at this point, I don’t even know why I must bother to look cute. half the time I have food or crayon on my clothes anyway. It’s a lot more that I’m getting of worn out of looking like I wear pajamas all day long. I just feel better when I look sharp and less slovenly.

Ugh…I must probably just wait for one of LOFT’s 50% off sales and get a few things to tide myself over.

Mind you, I like it. It’s just very strong, and it lingers a while.

3. Tear, tame, then toss.

These individually packaged sheets, which come 15 to a box for $18, are soaked with hair-smoothing oil. You just tear one open to get to the sheet, which feels like an oil-coated piece of wax paper, then smooth the sheet on your hair wherever you need to de-frizz.

For some reason, these remind me of those wet wipes you get at Kentucky Fried Chicken…

Ingredients:

Isopropyl Isostearate, Polysorbate 20, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Oil, fragrance (Parfum), Steardimonium Hydroxypropyl Panthenyl PEG-7 Dimethicone Phosphate Chloride, Benzyl Salicylate, Hexyl Cinnamal

4. They’re better for touch-ups than they are for primary frizz control.

As you can probably see from my cowlick pics, one sheet corrals a lot of of the renegade hairs, but a few stragglers get away. It doesn’t catch every fly-away, and a few fly-aways are fine with me, but I still wouldn’t 100% rely on these sheets for intense de-frizzing.

I think these are terrific as convenient once-in-a-while things, but they’re $1.20 each. That seems kind of expensive for a single use, doesn’t it? Like, sure, I’ll put one in my makeup bag for when I have an crucial meeting at HomeGoods, and I want a last-minute tszuj to look my best, but if all I’m doing is heading to baby story time, I don’t think I’d use one of these.

5. If you’re using a momentary root spray, enjoy out!
