Today marks my 250 Days of No-Buy!

Fun fact: As a Mandarin slang term, the number “250” (二百五 èrbǎiwǔ) is an insult indicating “stupid person” or “simpleton”.

Why I started a blog:

It must be pretty self obvious by now – I started this blog to distract myself from the challenge of my yearlong No-Buy!

My SO and friends also encouraged me to start a blog considering that I seem to take pleasure in sharing information about skincare and makeup. I also wanted to flex my writing muscles as well as have an outlet for creative pursuits like photography and digital illustrations.

Tips: Ask yourself, do you enjoy receiving likes on your blog entry? Do you get a tinge of excitement when a new comment is posted?  Of course you do.  Well, so does everyone else.  It’s great to give and to receive – don’t be selfish with blog participation.  Don’t just reply to your own blog comments, go and actually read other people’s blogs and participate there.

And don’t compare yourself! It’s tough to avoid this, but blogging is not a numbers game.  I really take pleasure in the qualitative things about blogging – the kinds of people I get to interact with, the information I learn, the beautiful photos shown – these to me, are a lot of important.

A few a lot more functional tips:

Jot down any blog ideas that pops up as soon as you think of them onto your phone or in a notebook, often those fleeting ideas are the best ones

Keep a few “back pocket” type articles in your draft folder for when inspiration just doesn’t come – they can tide you over until the blockage clears

Create monthly recurring articles like Empties or Favourites – this will automatically fill in content for your blog

The Ilia amazing Nudes palette is pretty amazing — both in terms of color temp and how amazing it is to use — and it’s all about easygoing eyes.

It comes with six moderately pigmented powder shadows. तिमीले पायौ:

Ilia wrapped everything up in a very sleek but simple, modern-looking white case with a mirror.

The Ilia needed Eyeshadow palette in amazing nude swatched on my skin (I’m an NC42 in MAC)
First, these shadows blend like they indicate it! No extreme lines here. I do a few swishes with a tapered blending brush, and I’m good to go.

Next, there’s barely any fallout from them, and the wear time is quite good. After a long day, I’ll see only minor creasing on my lids. My lids are dry, by the way, so I normally skip primer.

It’s a a lot more natural look and perfectly in line with Ilia’s laid-back aesthetic. I’m guessing that Ilia purposefully created the pigments to be only moderately punchy, which I appreciate when I only want a little something on my lids, and I don’t plan on taking pics (more on this in a second).

If you take pleasure in wearing color but like eye looks that define and highlight your lids without screaming “I’m obvious,” you’ll probably like it too. I think fans of the Clinique quads — which have a very similar vibe — will be into it. It’s a total errands-work-everyday piece.

With all that said, however, I’m not a fan of the way this palette photographs. The shadows simply don’t pop in pics like sincere Beauty’s get It together palette does (my current go-to).

I took a few pictures of the eyeshadows the other day, and while I could see them in real life, I looked like I was barely wearing any eye makeup in any way in the pics. On their own, the shadows mustn’t be lively enough to manage flash photography on my skin unless I do trickery to amplify the pigments, like by layering a base primer underneath them and using a wet eyeshadow brush.

I thought I’d post this up asap because this lipstick is a fairly new release and an online exclusive item – some people might be curious about how this looks in “real” photos.  Here is the lipstick in finally Free:

I purchased this the day it launched (April 7th – the same day that the VIB sale started! It was a busy day of online shopping) but it took 10 frustrating days for me to get my hands on the parcel (grrr courier services that don’t actually deliver!)

For those who may not know, this lipstick is the collaboration between Caitlyn Jenner and MAC.  100% of the selling price ($21 CAD) goes to the MAC AIDS Fund Transgender Initiative.  I remember seeing this announcement on IG and seeing some hateful comments directed at both Caitlyn Jenner and MAC.  Some people – I don’t understand and I guess I never will. Anyway, back to the lipstick, it is described as “Midtone rosy nude” in a Cremesheen formula.

It is very much a MLBB type shade which adds just a touch of colour to my pigmented lips. The Cremesheen formula implies it’s a little much more sheer with a bit of shine – it’s very comfortable on the lips with a bit of slip.

And of course I had to compare them against other MLBB type shades in my collection:

• MAC party Line: much more berry toned, deeper (I knew this one wouldn’t be a dupe but I wanted to include it to show the difference)
• MAC Mystical (LE from Alluring Aquatics collection): this is practically a dead-on dupe. It’s ever so slightly lighter. I’ve only worn finally totally free twice but I love the colour and formula – it’s very easy to wear and chooses just about any eye or blush colour. Unfortunately, this lipstick is an online exclusive and limited edition.  But I think for the beautiful product and the cause, it’s worth making that extra effort to get this.

And, because I was placing an purchase anyway, why not pick up some other stuff? I discovered last month that MAC now provides travel version of their many popular brushes. These are denoted by the “SH” in their names (for “short handle”) – usually MAC has these SH brushes in holiday sets but those are made in China. but these ones are all made in Japan, just like their full sized counterparts! I intend to take these with me on my trip. मैले पाए:

• 239SH Eye Shader Brush
• 217SH Blending Brush
• 129SH Powder/Blush Brush
I do already own the 2 eye brushes in the full size, but not the powder brush.

I also bought a few skincare basics:

• Cleanse Off Oil – one of my top 3 cleansing oils
• Lightful Softening lotion – never tried this before but it comes highly recommended (I just love that holographic box!)
• Strobe cream (travel size) – had this before and really like it, the small size lasts me ages
• pro Eye makeup remover (free 6ml sample)
